One of the most refreshing things about winter dressing is the bright color accents amidst the sea of dark clothing, at least for me. After such a funfilled busy weekend, I needed the simplicity of mostly monochromatic colors punctuated with bursts of bright color. It looks like i'm back to black Mondays.
I bought these shoe in anticipation of pretty spring and summer days...yes, i start planning that early. lol. But as you can see, i'm still working on that patience thing. Plus i thought it added the needed burst of color to my mostly dark oufit.

First of all, i can't believe its almost Christmas. It feels like this year absolutely flew by.
These pics are from this weekend. You guys know about my love for most things floral, so you know i had to dig out my floral blouse. Its been a while.
On the Christmas front, i still haven't finished my shopping..procrastination is a terrible disease. lol

Hey Guys!
Sorry i didn't get a chance to post the winner this weekend. It got kinda hectic, so i'm posting it today.
Thank you to everyone who entered.
Without further ado, the winner was post # 6 which was *cue drumroll please*

Congrats Leggy, email me your mailing info so i can send the card right over. :-)
A few days ago, i got this email from "Liz" with this question:

I just had to finally comment on your blog! I loove the way you put clothes together! In fact, that's one of the things I love the most about the Nigerians I know, they KNOW how to put clothes together! I love seeing interesting pieces put together especially with contrasting colors, but I'm always afraid to do it myself. I also love that all your pieces aren't super duper expensive. You obviously have a great thrift store to shop in, because you're able to find great pieces. I seem to get a little overwhelmed in thrift stores when I want an interesting piece (dress or shirt) and end up not getting anything other than boring solid colored basics. In general, i'd love to overhaul my entire wardrobe and make it as interesting as it could be in my mind.

Do you have any advice for a person who wants to be more adventurous with their wardrobe but has no idea where to begin?

-Liz

Hi Liz,
* First and foremost, you have to figure out what you like, whether its vibrant florals, bright colors, sequins, funky dresses, polka dots, short skirts, mini dresses, long skirts, ladylike styles etc, whatever it may be, so that you know what to look for when you shop. Do keep in mind though, everything is not for everybody. You should always pick things that flatter your body and accentuate your favorite parts.

* Be open to trying new things and pick up something interesting. Getting dressed should be fun, an expression of you; which is why spicing up your style would be more fun if you try different looks and different styles. While shopping, do keep in mind, that it’s ok to stray from the usual basic black or brown and go with something more eye-catching like sea foam green or pink or even polka dots or whatever it is that you want to try, because you may never know what works and what doesn’t if you don’t try it first.

* Now you have a game plan. Now what? Well, I’d suggest you add the jazziness, slowly till you get comfortable. Start with accessories…colorful shoes and tights, fun scarves, and statement jewelry like necklaces and bangles and cocktail rings…these are ways you can pepper items of interest to the seemingly basic outfits you already have.
* After you get more comfortable, or more daring, you can throw in bigger items of your choice into the mix. I think at this point, you may now have an idea of what you like, and what flatters you.. that knowledge is essential.. But, instead of completely overhauling your wardrobe, I say only, start one item at a time. Add a sequined blouse here, and a boldly colored dress there as you see fitting. During the shopping process, you have to remain true to yourself. Are you really going to wear that sequined blouse? Where to? I like to think of at least one place that I’ll wear the item to, as well as 2 items I already own that it’ll go with, BEFORE I purchase it. No sense in wasting money on items to decorate your closet floor.
I hope that helped

Decided to wear my very comfortable silk romper around the house, with tights of course ... i had no plans of leaving the house, but got talked into running some errands with my mom.So i threw one of my mom's old sweaters and a black blazer. She's now in the car, honking at me to come on..lol.

I was a bit overdressed for work..as i tend to do. lol. I decided dress up a little bit, and started by getting out my satin coat (thrifted) before the weather got too cold for it. Also,i havent worn this dress in a while, and its a DVF originale..lol(another thrifting find)..Its random finds like these this that make me love thrift shopping.

Kimi tagged me to do a meme i usually run from those(because i'm lazy..lol) but in the spirit of x-mas and sharing(because sharing is caring)..i'm going to try and list a few mildly interesting things about me..

1. I collect shoes...its a growing collection but eventually, i plan on having a room just for my shoe collection.

2. Dancing is my therapy. Its one of 3 things that are guaranteed to make me feel better, regardless of how i feel.

3. Reading is my other therapy...libraries and rooms filled with books make me really happy.

4. I really love food...and i tend to hum and dance a little when i'm really enjoying my meal.

5. As much as i love living in the city, i'm have dreams of being a beach bum (shout out to my Miami trip mates, Ocean Dr, Ai! Ai! Ai!)lol

6. I've never been absolutely certain what i want to do with my life...but after i heard the quote, "Dress for the job/career you want" i started dressing up for work...hoping it will help lead me to where i belong. lol

7. My family drives me crazy, but i know for a fact that i'd be lost without them.

8. My favorite photographer and bestest friend probably doesn't know this, but he sparked my interest in sneakers.

I've had this skirt for ages and i wear it often enough but i realized that it somehow, never got posted on the blog. Even though the skirt is mostly navy, i've paired it with a black AA dress that i got before my shopping hiatus.
I suddenly have all this time before work( with school being out) that i don't even know what to do with myself now. Which why i had time to untangle the mass of necklaces around my neck which i borrowed *cough stole* from my sister this morning.
Also... i absolutely love thigh/knee highs..

Happy Friday Guys!!!
I'm pretty excited about my first giveaway. I was contacted by the very sweet Tyler from Maurices, offering a $20 dollar Gift Card to an Africana Wardrobe Diary reader. Honestly, i'd never heard of them till i was contacted, but i checked 'em out, and its a pretty cool shop. They have something for everyone...things to wear to work, night outings and just to chill.
They're currently celebrating "Splurge Parties" which is like having a Girls Night Out, at your favorite store, after-hours so you have the store to yourself to shop. They have personal shoppers and offer style advice and they even offer discounts on your purchases to you and your friends just for hosting and attending the parties.

Now the fun part....The Giveaway!!!
Because i'm lazy..hehe...i'm going to keep it super simple... 2 steps...
1. Visit the Maurices website and pick out an item that you like or would purchase from them
2. Come back and comment, telling me what you've chosen.
Entries are due by Next week Friday, December 18. I'll pick a winner randomly and the winner will be posted next weekend.

I figured i'd show you guys my top three items...
1. This incredibly ladylike dress that would be Fantastic for work and social events that require sophistication..

2. This simple but sassy tank that i could wear anywhere..from a night out to just hanging out.

3. This super sequined blazer, simple because "sequins" is my middle name. Nuff said.

Good Luck, Now your turn!

Ituen Basi's beautiful collection debuted at the Arise African Fashion Week 2009. My two cents? The collection is a stunning mashup of different ankara colors and prints. Ms. Basi meticulously masters the art of patching different prints together, a task that could very easily come off as sloppy and tacky. Instead, the pieces are unique but sophisticated, fun and vibrant and to me, quite wearable. The looks are completely accesorized to the hilt too, look at the bangles on the wrists of all the models...LOVE! Can you guess my favorite among these?
Enjoy!

I 'm a little excited about this leopard print skirt i found at Target a while back. Note: This skirt is a recent purchase, but its not new.Lol. I haven't my pact with myself to not purchase anything new for the rest of the year. Not gonna lie, its a little hard, being that i'm doing a lot of Christmas Shopping.
Back to the skirt, I like that its a pencil skirt, that's jazzed up w/animal print. I wore all black..mostly, my tights are gray; to let the skirt shine in the spotlight.

Today was one of those days that looked like you could run outside in your shortest skirt. You would have frozen your knees off. I nearly caught frostbite while taking these pics.
If you look a little closely, you'll notice the bow in my hair matches my shirt. Somedays i'm a little matchy-matchy.

For me, its kinda crazy to say i've been blogging for a year now. I like to look back and see how far i've come. Or how much i've changed.

This outfit was worn around this time last year, and it remains one of my favorite outfits ever.

Another rainy day
We sat inside by the radiator
Watching old black and white films
Where everybody sang
You played in my solitude
Didn't get dressed 'til 2

~my favorite lines of the song "Another Rainy Day" by Corrine Bailey Ray

It pretty much sums my feelings for what i wish for on rainy days.

But being a working girl doesn't allow me the luxury of laying around in my blankets reading and watching tv on rainy days. So i did the next best thing and overdressed for work.
My dress is my most recent and final purchase of 2009.It has such an feminine shape and vibrant floral print that made me feel lovely all day.Ok, I'm gonna give these boots a rest sometime soon. Honest.
I'm in complete chill mode, at least when i'm not going to work. Like today, I've thrown on boots made for walking, paired w/ a comfortable plaid shirt.
i'm also running on few hours of sleep, which is probably why i'm so chill aka tired. I've been taking a random dance breaks to rejuvenate myself... that along with frequent trips to starbucks for chocolate chocolate chip frappuchinos. Because when the weather starts getting chillier, i start to crave frozen beverages.

Gahh!! Its nearing the end of the semester, so exams are aplenty! Had a final exam at the bright and early hour of 8am this morning. I opted for one of my favorite floral dresses and layered it with a longsleeved top and a knit sweater that isn't pictured. And wore the ankle boots that i seem to be living in this season.
